🚨 Jabalpur Man Loses ₹45 Lakh in Digital Arrest Scam – July 2025
In a shocking incident from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, a 79-year-old man named V.K. Kapoor became the latest victim of the alarming “Digital Arrest” scam—a new-age cyber fraud technique that continues to target elderly citizens across India.
🔍 What Happened?
- On July 15, Mr. Kapoor received a phone call from a person pretending to be a DCP from Mumbai Police accusing him of being involved in money laundering.
- Using a fake video call setup, the caller conducted an alleged “investigation” over 72 hours, mentally pressuring the senior citizen.
- Frightened and convinced, Kapoor withdrew ₹45 lakh from his SBI Ridge Road account and transferred it to the criminal’s Yes Bank account on July 17.
📢 Complaint Filed
The family immediately approached the State Cyber Cell. An investigation is underway into the scam, including tracing the IP, bank account holders, and digital footprints.
📈 Rise in Cybercrime in Jabalpur
Jabalpur has witnessed an uptick in cyber frauds. As per official records:
- Over ₹12 crore lost in cyber scams in just 6 months.
- More than 497 cases filed but only ₹84 lakh recovered.
- Common scams: WhatsApp Image Frauds, Facebook Honey Traps, and Spoofed Police Calls.
🛡️ How to Stay Safe from Digital Arrest Scams
- Never trust unsolicited calls posing as police officers.
- Ask for written notice and verify caller ID from official sources.
- Do not transfer money under fear or pressure.
- Immediately report such cases to the State Cyber Cell or dial 1930.
