India’s Startup Surge in Defence: Young Engineers Bag Army Deal with Kamikaze Drones

Young Indian Engineers Launch Kamikaze Drone with Army – Apollyon Dynamics Defence Innovation

In a significant leap for India's defence-tech ecosystem, two 20-year-old engineering students from BITS Pilani have achieved what even seasoned defence contractors strive for — they have secured a supply deal with the Indian Army for their indigenous, high-speed kamikaze drones. Their startup, Apollyon Dynamics, has become a symbol of India's growing capability in Make-in-India defence innovation.

🚁 The Innovation: Kamikaze Drones Made for Indian Terrain

Apollyon Dynamics’ drones are designed for fast-strike operations, traveling at speeds of 300 km/h and carrying payloads up to 1 kg. What sets these drones apart is their ability to avoid radar detection and function seamlessly in India’s varied terrains — from deserts to high-altitude regions.

These drones are radar-resistant, agile, and capable of precision targeting. The design has been optimized with low-cost manufacturing in mind, enabling scalability and deployability in both border surveillance and counterinsurgency operations.

🎓 From Campus Project to Battlefield Equipment

What started as a LinkedIn pitch from the students — Sankalp Srivastava and Aarav Joshi — turned into a full-fledged defence contract. Their story exemplifies how India’s startup environment is becoming a breeding ground for high-impact innovation, especially under schemes like Startup India and Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO).

“Our mission is to build indigenous tactical UAVs that can assist in saving lives at the border. Getting validation from the Army is both an honor and a responsibility,” said Srivastava in an interview.

📈 The Larger Startup Boom in Defence

India has witnessed a rapid rise in defence-focused startups over the past five years. Platforms like iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) have been crucial in facilitating funding, trials, and mentorship. From autonomous underwater vehicles to battlefield AI, Indian innovators are increasingly addressing gaps in India’s military readiness.

With geopolitical tensions and a growing need for self-reliance, the Indian government is promoting indigenous tech under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission. The Indian Defence Budget has allocated substantial funds toward procurement from Indian startups and MSMEs in 2025.

💼 Policy Push and Talent Pipeline

The success of Apollyon Dynamics aligns well with recent reforms led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. With the recent tax and compliance reliefs for startups and MSMEs, many young entrepreneurs are now finding the defence sector viable for innovation.

Another major push has come from advances in artificial intelligence and robotics. As seen in the blog “AI Disrupting Industries and Jobs in India”, India is aligning its startup ecosystem with frontier technologies — and the defence sector is no exception.

🌐 Global Context: The Future of Tactical Warfare

The use of kamikaze drones is not new globally — countries like the US, Israel, and Turkey have leveraged such tech. However, India’s local development of similar tools is a game-changer. It means lower import dependence, faster deployment, and tech adapted to local operational needs.

📣 Conclusion: A Glimpse into Future Warfare

The success of Apollyon Dynamics is not just a personal win — it is a signal of India’s evolving defence capabilities. As tech and defence continue to converge, we are likely to see more young innovators redefine how India secures its borders.
